About Rotherham

Around half of the borough is rural in nature, but it is well-connected to all areas of the country by its proximity to the M1 and M18 motorways and inter-city rail network. In 2005, the opening of Robin Hood Doncaster / Sheffield Airport has brought facilities for international travel to the borough's doorstep.

Around 250,000 people currently live in Rotherham borough, but that figure is increasing steadily, as more people are attracted by the quality of life and economic opportunities on offer. Like the rest of the UK, Rotherham has an ageing population, with the number of people aged over 75 expected to grow by 71% over the next 25 years. The borough's ethnic minority population is 3.1%.

Rotherham people are rightly proud of their history, their heritage, their achievements and the beautiful countryside that makes up around 50 per cent of the borough.

A focused approach to regeneration, inward investment and supporting new businesses has allowed the area's dominance by traditional industries such as coal-mining and steel-making to be replaced by new and vibrant economies for the 21st Century.

Deprivation in the borough is being reduced, and unemployment has also fallen from its peak of 22 per cent in the mid 1980s to less than three per cent today.

Rotherham has the lowest crime rates in South Yorkshire, and fear of crime has been cut almost in half since 2002.
