Introduction
Rotherham's three year Tourism Plan sets the scene explaining how the borough has developed tourism to be worth over £235 million to the local economy annually.
The plan has six main objectives:
1) To improve the quality standards of Rotherham's tourism
2) To improve the image and perception of Rotherham
3) To improve the effectiveness of partnership working
4) To promote the borough as a visitor location
5) To attract investment to the local area, increasing job creation and ensuring sustainable development
6) To increase the skills base in tourism associated areas
The plan includes information about how the area has developed over the past few years and about future developments, including the 25 year renaissance plans. Business and leisure tourism have the potential to grow further. In the near future, by 2008, the targets include:
- the value of tourism to be worth £258 million annually,
- the provision of 4,507 full time equivalent jobs,
- the assessment of at least 60% of the accommodation stock
- to increase the number of business tourism enquiries
- and to maintain the conversion rate for business tourism in the area.
"Tourism is bringing enormous benefits to Rotherham and has the potential to grow further and deliver more advantages for those who live, learn and work in the borough, as well as those who visit the area from elsewhere", said Councillor Gerald Smith in the Rotherham Tourism Plan.
