Archive Collections

The Archives and Local Studies Service holds over 700 archive collections in its secure and environmentally controlled strong room. We currently have over 4000 boxes of Archives, which would fill over 8 double decker buses.

The archival documents cover the history of the whole of Rotherham Borough from 1328 to the present day. The archival documents that we hold come in all shapes and sizes, from files of paper and parchment title deeds to large volumes and maps and plans that fill a whole wall.

Whether you are interested in the history of your village or neighbourhood, a particular industry or your own family, we have original material which will help you understand something of Rotherham’s past.

The collections include :-

  • Council and Government Records including Rotherham County Borough Council
  • Education Records
  • Rotherham Workhouse Records
  • Business Records including mines, manufacturing and solicitors
  • Groups and Societies Records
  • Trust and Charities Records
  • Parish Council Records
  • Non-Conformist Records
  • Titles Deeds
  • Maps and Plans
  • Individuals and Families Records
  • Landed Estates Records
  • Manorial Records

As part of a Heritage Lottery Fund project called "Rolling out the Archives" the archive strongroom was upgraded in April 2006. A major part of the project is also to catalogue some of the largest archives, including those of the Rotherham Methodist Circuit, Rawmarsh Urban District Council and Parker Rhodes solicitors.
