Claimants who have had to leave his or her normal home while it is having essential repairs can claim Housing Benefit provided that they make rent payments in respect of either the normal home or the temporary accommodation i.e.:- claim Housing Benefit for the property they are liable to pay rent for. If they make payments in respect of both properties they are not covered for payments on both and can only claim Housing Benefit in respect of one of the properties.
Council Tax Benefit can be claimed for the property the customer is liable to pay Council Tax on. Again the customer cannot claim Council Tax benefit on both properties however; they should claim an exemption for the normal home that they have had to leave.
If customers vacate their normal home and move in with family or friends who are in receipt of Housing/Council Tax benefit, no non dependant deductions will apply if they intend to return to their normal home.
You will need to contact the Council on 01709 336006 or visit one of our Customer Services Centre in Rotherham Town Centre (Civic Building), Dinnington (New Street) or Swinton (Station Street) and will be asked to give details and given advice dependant on your circumstances.
